The double-space rule was invented during the era of monospace fonts, because of typewriters, because it was impossible to tell where a sentence began. With the advent of computers and fonts that actually compensated for the natural amount of space between characters, the double-space system became unnecessary and, thus, is both incorrect and dated. ;)
